“Your Freedom”- Behind the Song

By: jeremy barber

In 2017, our church began talking about four promises God makes to His people. In Exodus 6:6-8, God promises to save us, free us, and give us purpose — all of which leads to a life that's overflowing. We knew we couldn’t just talk about these promises. We had to sing them.

“Your Freedom” is a song from our church, for our church. The bridge of this song is one of the most special parts. These are the lyrics we hear the most stories about.

Here in Your presence, freedom is found.

Here in Your presence, chains hit the ground.

Here in Your presence, fear turns to run.

Here in Your presence, faith has begun.

Healing is done.

Your Sons will come home.

Daughters made whole.

Families restored in Your presence.

Your heart is revealed.

Redemption is sealed as death turns to life in Your presence.

Initially, we had a bridge, but we didn’t feel like it was what the song needed. We went back to the drawing board and began to ask the question, “What happens in Your presence, God?”

He answered us, saying: Freedom is found. Chains get broken and shaken off. Fear runs away like a scared dog. Faith begins. Healing is done.

When we say healing is done, we aren’t saying that it simply happens. We’re saying that it is finished. It is done.

Your Sons will come home.

Daughters made whole.

Families restored in Your presence.

Your heart is revealed.

Redemption is sealed as death turns to life in Your presence.

These lines are some of the most personal and powerful for me. It’s my story. It’s the story of God chasing me down and bringing me home. These lines are also proclaiming and prophesying that this story won’t just be my story.

Freedom is for every person. It’s for our church. It’s for your church. God is making good on His promise to bring His sons back to their Father and make His daughters whole. Families are being fully restored. Just a few weeks ago, an entire family — father, mother, sons, and daughters — responded to the invitation of salvation and were adopted into God’s family forever!

Even when we run from God, these promises were meant to give us hope in all things, even in the times we feel unredeemable.

“Your Freedom” was birthed from God keeping true to His promises, not only to His promise to save but also to His promise to give freedom, purpose, and a life of overflow. God doesn’t waste any part of our life. Even when we run from God, these promises were meant to give us hope in all things, even in the times we feel unredeemable. In His kindness, God has brought us out of our slavery and shame into a life of complete freedom!
